Botulinum Toxin A
Botulinum toxin A (BTA) injections, such as Botox® and Dysport®, helps to relax muscles in the injected area. These injections, which are essentially neurotoxins relax the muscles by reducing their nerve activity.
When used on the face, BTA effectively relaxes the targeted facial muscles. Thus, BTA is widely used for wrinkle treatment.
Besides wrinkles, BTA also treats other conditions including migraines, overdeveloped muscles and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
As BTA treatment is non-invasive, there is only minimum downtime. Patients can return to their usual routine after treatment. However, there may be some temporary redness or swelling in the injection site.
Wrinkle reduction for common areas of the face:
- Forehead lines are horizontal lines when you look up.
- Crow’s feet are horizontal lines visible when you smile.
- Glabella lines are vertical lines between 2 eyebrows.
- Bunny Lines are horizontal lines when you squeeze you nose.
Hyperhidrosis - Excessive Sweating
Hyperhidrosis is excessive heavy sweating that is not due to heat or exercise. In some patients, the excess sweat soaks through clothes or drips off hands. Besides, it is disrupting daily activities, result in social anxiety or embarrassment.
As mentioned, BTA is an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis. When injected, BTA reduces the sweat production from the sweat glands. Repeated treatments may be needed after 4-6 months initially. However, over time, patients can go longer between treatment cycles.
Face Shaping - V Shape Face
BTA is used in the masseter muscles (the jaw muscles, near your cheekbones). It helps to reduce the jaw tension and soften a square jaw to give a slimmer lower face shape. This treatment is also sometimes called jaw Botox or V-shape face contouring.
Other than improving facial contour, masseter Botox also helps in managing teeth grinding, relieves headaches or migraines caused by a tensed jaw
Gummy Smile
A gummy smile is when too much gums shows when one smiles. Ideally, no more than 2 millimeters of upper gum tissues should be exposed during a smile.
People with a “gummy” smile feel their teeth are smaller than normal due to the excessive upper gum exposure while smiling. As a result, they may be reluctant to smile, or sometimes even become so self-conscious that when smiling, they develop a habit of covering their mouth .
With this treatment, the muscles around the upper lip are relaxed. Thus, the upper gums remain covered while smiling. As it is a non-invasive treatment, the downtime is minimal. Immediately, the results are often seen with this treatment, however optimum results can be seen in 2 weeks’ time.
